Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph provides information related to percentages of households that owned electrical appliances, and the amount time people spent doing the household chores in a certain country in the years 1920 to 2019.

To begin with, 40% of household owned washing machine in 1920, and it consistantly grows to 75% in 2019. While the vacuum cleaner was only 30% in the starting in 1920, it gradually increases to 100% by 2019. The refrigerator was just nearly at 3% in the 1920 and it sharply overtakes the washing machine and vacuum cleaner to reach at 90% in 1960, and steadily achieved 100% ownership by 2019.

In 1920, people spent 50 hours per week on doing house work; and it significantly drop to 20 hours in 1960, then it gradually decreases to about 12 hours per week, over the century ending 2019.

In contrast, this particular country in these 100 years starting from 1920 to ending in 2019, increased the ownership of elcetronic appliances; whereas, the time individuals spent on doing these daily chores reduced.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all three appliances and the housework time, making relevant comparisons between the increase in appliance ownership and the decrease in time spent on chores. To reach a higher band, ensure you avoid minor inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, you stated the refrigerator reached 100% in 2019, but the graph shows it reaching that point earlier, around 1980. Additionally, ensure your overview is more distinct from the body paragraphs to highlight the 'big picture' trends more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the appliances and housework, and a concluding summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'While', and 'In contrast' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be more sophisticated. For instance, the transition between the appliance data and the housework data could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of information is generally easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consistently', 'gradually', and 'significantly' to describe trends. There are some spelling errors, such as 'elcetronic' and 'consictantly', which are minor but noticeable. You also rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'in 1920' and 'in 2019'. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure greater precision in your word choice to avoid minor slips that slightly detract from the professional tone of an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'amount time' (missing 'of'), '40% of household owned' (should be 'households'), and 'it consistantly grows' (tense inconsistency). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the semicolon usage in the third paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing historical data will help improve your accuracy.
