cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is suggestive that there exists a correlation between the ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing housework in households. To analyze, we compare two line charts that describe the housework, including washing clothes, preparing meals, and clean for a given country between 1920 and 2019.

The percentage of households with electrical appliances showed an upward trend. The percentage of refrigerator ownership had the steepest growth, which started as close to 0% in 1920 and reached 100% in 1980. Similarly, the percentage of using vacuum cleaner reached 100% in 2000 with a relatively higher proportion of 30% in 1920 to begin with. Although the washing machine showed less rate of growth, the percentage of households that own such machine increased from 40% in 1920 to 70% in 1960. Such percentage remained stable at approximately 70% with some small fluctuations between 1960 to 2019.

On the contrary, the number of hours that each household spent on housework had declined. In 1920, people tended to spend 50 hours per week on the housework. As the more households obtaining electrical appliances to assist in doing their housework, the number of hours for housework per week gradually reduced to around 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task by describing the appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours, making relevant comparisons between the two sets of data. The key features, such as the steep growth of refrigerators and the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on housework, are well-highlighted. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with complete accuracy; for instance, the washing machine data shows a decline after 1960 rather than remaining perfectly stable, and the initial percentage for vacuum cleaners in 1920 is closer to 30% as you noted, but the description could be more precise regarding the end-point.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the appliances, and a final paragraph for the housework hours. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Although', and 'On the contrary' effectively to link your points. However, the transition between the two charts could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences, such as 'As the more households obtaining electrical appliances', are slightly awkward in their construction, which slightly impacts the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'upward trend', 'steepest growth', and 'inverse correlation' are used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'clean' (which should be 'cleaning' as a noun) and 'less rate of growth' (which is better expressed as 'a slower rate of growth'). While you use some less common vocabulary, there is room for more sophisticated collocations to describe trends. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication, but further variety would enhance the precision of your descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'It is suggestive that' (a more natural phrasing would be 'It is suggested that' or 'The data suggests'), and 'As the more households obtaining' (which should be 'As more households obtained'). Additionally, 'the percentage of using vacuum cleaner' should be 'the percentage of households using vacuum cleaners'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of gerunds after prepositions or as subjects.
