Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graphs show how the tendency of owning electrical appliances among households has changed from 1920 to 2019, and also display its effect on the time spent weekly on housework.

Overall, with the adoption of different electrical equipment by families, the time devoted previously on doing chores was on a decline throughout the period of study.

In 1920, very few households started using electronic devices, with 30% owning vacuum cleaners, 40% with washing machines and almost non-existent users of refrigerators. However, 2 decades later, all three machines were adopted by more than half of the households. The usage of vacuum cleaner was in an escalating growth surpassing the other appliances by 1960 and being used by 90% of the households. In the same period, the remaining electronics were equally owned by 60% of families.

Furthermore, 20 years later since 1960, washing machine saw a decline of around 5%, while the others being owned by over 90% of the houses. However, the trend for the washing machine saw an incline after 1980, and by 2019, over 70% owned them, while almost all had a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner. Finally, the number of hours of housework being done weekly saw a fall across years, where household spent around 50 hours weekly doing chores in 1920, and significantly dropping to around 10% by 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main trends for both the appliance ownership and the housework hours. The overview is clear and highlights the inverse relationship between the two sets of data. You have selected key features, such as the rapid growth of vacuum cleaner usage and the significant decline in housework hours. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for example, you mentioned '10%' for housework hours in 2019, whereas the graph indicates 10 hours, which is a significant distinction in data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In the same period' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the data. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for instance, in the final paragraph, 'the others' is slightly ambiguous, and ensuring clear antecedents for all pronouns will enhance the flow and clarity of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with some precision. Phrases like 'escalating growth', 'surpassing', and 'devoted' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'non-existent users' (which is slightly awkward) and '20 years later since 1960' (which is redundant). However, these do not impede communication. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid slightly repetitive phrasing when describing trends, such as 'saw a decline' or 'saw an incline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is consistently clear. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'the time devoted previously on doing chores' (should be 'to doing') and 'the usage of vacuum cleaner' (missing an article). Additionally, 'the others being owned' is a fragmented construction. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
