Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two charts below illustrate technological appliances ownership while the other one demonstrates the time people spent doing chores weekly for each household in the period from 1920 to 2019 particularly in one country.

Overall, the first graph shows an upward trend while the second one is the opposite. Refrigerator and vacuum cleaner are the most popular at the endwhile washing machine is less used despite being more commonly favorited in the beginning.

Regarding the first chart, all household appliances experienced a significant change over time. At first, washing machine started off highest, at 40%, while vacuum cleaner began with 30% and refrigerator at near 0. After a few decades, there are many differences. The figure for refrigerator and vacuum cleaner all peaked at 100% in 2000 and remains stable after that while washing machine only finished at around 74%.

Concerning the second graph, there is a huge decrease over the period. It starts off at 50 hours, then drops down to only 20 hours in 1960, and finnally ends at near 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends in both charts. You have successfully highlighted the key features, such as the upward trend in appliance ownership and the significant decline in housework hours. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the two sets of data, such as linking the rise in appliance ownership to the reduction in housework time. The data is generally accurate, though the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing, as it started at 40% and ended at 74%, which is an increase, not a decrease as implied by the phrasing 'less used'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use basic cohesive devices like 'Regarding', 'Concerning', and 'At first' to guide the reader. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the two charts could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the overall flow would benefit from more sophisticated linking words to connect the trends across the two graphs rather than treating them as entirely separate entities.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trend', 'peaked', and 'remains stable'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'commonly favorited' and 'the other one demonstrates', which sound slightly unnatural. While you successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to the charts, the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing trends and data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the figure for refrigerator and vacuum cleaner all peaked' (subject-verb agreement) and 'at the endwhile' (missing space). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional slips. You have attempted some complex structures, but they are not always error-free. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent tense usage (e.g., 'remains' vs 'remained') will help improve your accuracy.
