Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The description of the data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing, such as the claim that housework dropped from '50% usage', which misinterprets the unit of measurement (hours per week). While the key trends are identified, the lack of precise data reporting and the misinterpretation of the second graph's axis limit the score. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between percentages and hours, and provide more accurate comparisons between the different appliances over the specified time periods.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is somewhat mechanical. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'According to this graph', 'Furthermore', 'on the other hand'), the transitions between sentences are occasionally abrupt. The paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to separate the description of appliances from the description of housework hours. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the logical progression of the argument is hindered by the lack of clear, cohesive links between the two distinct datasets provided in the prompt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'percentage' and 'ownership'. Some word choices are awkward or incorrect in context, such as 'hiked in 2 decades' or 'little slumped'. The use of '10 decades' to describe a 100-year period is stylistically poor. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more varied and precise vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'a significant decline', and ensure collocations are natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('the graph', 'the percentage'), incorrect verb forms ('vacuum cleaner raised'), and punctuation errors. The sentence structure is often repetitive, and there are issues with subject-verb agreement. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for articles and consistent verb tenses would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
