Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, including the trends for appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the refrigerator trend is slightly confusing, and the comparison between the appliances and the housework hours could be more explicitly linked to show the inverse relationship. While all parts of the task are addressed, the data reporting is occasionally imprecise, such as the reference to '1020' instead of 1920. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited more accurately and that the relationship between the two charts is highlighted more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the repetitive use of 'moreover' and 'in the year of'. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the transition between the appliance data and the housework data is abrupt. Some sentences lack clear links, making the flow feel disjointed at times. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'numbers of hours... shrinking' and 'masses accept 90%'. The student attempts to use some academic vocabulary like 'proliferated' and 'stagnant', but these are sometimes used incorrectly in context. Spelling errors, such as '1020' for 1920 and 'sent' instead of 'spent', are present. To improve, the student should focus on using collocations correctly and expanding their range of verbs to describe trends more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('in 1920 refrigerator was zero'), incorrect verb forms ('has steady rose'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('ratio was remain stagnant'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would be beneficial.
