Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to summarize the charts but fails to accurately report the data. There are significant inaccuracies in the interpretation of the graphs, such as the claim that refrigerator usage ceased after 1980, which contradicts the visual data. The overview is too simplistic and lacks a clear connection between the two trends. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in data reporting and the misinterpretation of the trends prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure that you carefully read the axes and data points before writing, and focus on highlighting the most significant trends rather than listing individual years without context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate, such as the use of 'Surprisingly' to introduce a factual error. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, particularly in the transition between the discussion of appliances and the time spent on housework. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the comparison between the different appliances. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring a logical flow between sentences would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'number of people having' and 'went down year by year' are basic and lack the precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. There are also issues with word choice and capitalization, such as 'Electric appliances' and 'Refrigerator' being capitalized inconsistently. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision expected at higher bands. Incorporating more specific terminology related to trends and data, such as 'fluctuated,' 'declined steadily,' or 'reached a peak,' would improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentences, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'there were same proportion,' 'their was no usage,' and 'in the upcoming year from 1980 to until 2019.' These errors, along with issues in punctuation and article usage, occasionally impede the flow of the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of control over basic grammatical structures and the presence of frequent errors limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help in achieving greater accuracy.
