Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the main features of the graph, identifying trends and making comparisons. However, the task instructions mention two sets of data: electrical appliance ownership AND the amount of time spent on housework. The student completely omitted the data regarding the time spent on housework, which is a significant omission. While the trends for appliances are described, the failure to address half of the prompt limits the score. The overview is present but lacks the necessary breadth to cover the full scope of the provided charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate (e.g., 'following this period', 'turning to the remaining category'). Some sentences lack logical flow due to punctuation errors and missing articles, which makes the progression of ideas feel slightly disjointed. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall cohesion could be improved with more varied linking words and better sentence-to-sentence connectivity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends (e.g., 'upward trend', 'rose sharply', 'steady'). However, there is a lack of variety and some inaccuracies in word choice. For instance, 'highest category' is used where 'highest percentage' would be more precise. There are also issues with capitalization and missing articles, which detract from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 response. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise terminology related to data description and ensure consistent word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. These include missing articles ('the' washing machine), subject-verb agreement issues ('line graph illustrate'), and inconsistent capitalization at the start of sentences. Punctuation is also problematic, with several run-on sentences or fragments. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of basic errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading for basic grammar and punctuation is essential.
