Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line charts depict the rapid changes in choice for owning the electrical appliances, and portion of time dedicated for household chores in a nation over a century. At a glance, it can be seen that there is a decrease in number of hours that people spend on doing housework.

Refrigerators were used only in small number of homes(2%) during 1920. But then the percentage of households possessing them increased to 100% by the end of 2000 and remained stable till 2019. Similar trend can be observed with vacuum cleaners, as there popularity increased significantly from 30% in 1920 to 100% by 2000. Washing machine ownerships increased rapidly from 40% in 1920 to 70% in 1960, but then it dipped by 5% and then increased moderately to just above 70% in 2019.

During 1920, 50 hours per week were contributed to perform household works. However, the trend decreased rapidly, and by 2019 only one tenth hours per week of the previously mentioned data were dedicated for household chores.

Overall, by the end of 2019, almost each household had a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner, and only 10 hours were spent per week on doing household tasks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task, including the appliance ownership percentages and the decline in housework hours. The comparison between the two sets of data is logical. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more precise data points; for instance, describing the washing machine trend as 'dipping by 5%' is good, but ensure all data points are clearly linked to the specific years provided in the graph. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the appliances and housework, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Similar trend', and 'Overall' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases further to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'During 1920', you could use more sophisticated transitions like 'At the beginning of the period under review'. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'possessing', 'significantly', and 'moderately'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'choice for owning' instead of 'trends in the ownership of' and 'one tenth hours' which is slightly awkward phrasing. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is positive. To improve, focus on more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'a steady increase' or 'a sharp decline'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response, which supports clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'there popularity' (should be 'their popularity') and 'ownerships' (should be 'ownership'), these do not impede communication. Your control of tense is generally good, correctly using the past tense to describe historical data. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice constructions, to describe the data more fluently. Ensure you proofread for small errors like subject-verb agreement and possessive pronouns.
