Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the overview is somewhat simplistic, and the data reporting is occasionally inaccurate or imprecise. For instance, stating that the usage of all appliances was between 50-60% after two decades (1940) is not fully supported by the visual data provided. Additionally, the description of the second graph lacks a clear comparison between the two sets of data, which is a requirement for a higher band. The response addresses the task but lacks the analytical depth required for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In 1920', 'After two decades', and 'Overall', but some transitions are mechanical or incorrectly punctuated, such as the use of a semicolon in 'house chaos, while; other'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved to create a more cohesive narrative. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several awkward word choices, such as 'house chaos' instead of 'households' and 'manipulated' when describing the fluctuation of hours, which is an incorrect usage of the term. While the student uses some relevant terminology like 'utilization' and 'appliances', the range is limited. Spelling is generally accurate, but the overall lexical control is basic and occasionally hinders the professional tone expected in an Academic Task 1 response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'number of hours housework done' (missing 'was'), 'washing machine used by 64%' (passive voice error), and '90% were used vacuum cleaner' (incorrect structure). Punctuation is also problematic, particularly the misuse of semicolons. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and correct passive construction is needed.
