Student answer (Band 7.0)

The first graph illustrates how much of a nation's population has a washing machine, a refrigerator, or a vacuum cleaner from 1920 until 2019, while the second one offers data regarding each family's utilization of time on essential housework through the same period.

Overall, we can observe that as more people used higher number of electrical appliances, they spend fewer hours on chores.

In 1920, each of the three categories in the study comprised last than half of the total percentage of households products, with washing machine at 40 percent, refrigerator at 30 percent, and vacuum cleaner at barely above 0. As the years progressed, each of the items grew in popularity with the consumers, and, eventually, reaching their highest point. By 2019, both refrigerator and vacuum cleaner made up 100 percent of the households' electrical appliance purchases, whilst washing machine dropped to third, ending with about 75 percent.

When the public had the least number of electronic gadgets in 1920, many people were spending 50 hours every week, the most amount in the years researched, doing chores at home. Then, allocated time for housework decreased as more technology is bought and utilized in many households. This ultimately led to people doing just 10 hours of domestic works each week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have identified the main trends for both the appliance ownership and the time spent on housework. The overview is clear and highlights the inverse relationship between the two sets of data. However, there is a minor inaccuracy in the data reporting: you stated that the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner reached 100 percent in 2019, whereas the graph shows the refrigerator reaching 100 percent but the vacuum cleaner plateauing slightly below that. Additionally, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing, as it did not drop to third place in terms of percentage, but rather ended at a lower percentage than the other two. Overall, the main features are well-selected and compared.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'while', 'as the years progressed', and 'ultimately', which help connect the sentences. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. For instance, the transition between the appliance data and the housework time could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets, which aids readability. Overall, the structure is coherent and the information is presented in a logical sequence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'utilization', 'comprised', and 'allocated'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'households products' instead of 'household appliances' and 'electronic gadgets' when referring to appliances like washing machines. While these do not impede communication, they show a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, try to use more specific collocations related to data trends, such as 'witnessed a steady increase' or 'experienced a significant decline'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'comprised last than half' (should be 'less than'), 'as more technology is bought' (should be 'was bought' to maintain tense consistency), and 'the most amount in the years researched'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your points. You have attempted to use complex structures, but the control over them is inconsistent. Focusing on maintaining consistent verb tenses throughout the report and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
