cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graphs compare information about the proportion of three different electrical appliances in households and number of hours per week over the period from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it is clear that all figures showed an upward trend over the period, with refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership remained dominant, while number of hours experienced a downward trend throughout the period.

At the beginning of the period, refrigerator ownership stood at 2%. It then increased sharply to 100% in 1980. After that, the figure remained same by the end of the period. Subsequently, Washing machine and vacuum cleaner ownership increased with same rate between 1920 and 1940, which was 20%. However, after 1960, the figures showed an diverge with vacuum cleaner ownership increased and reached at 100%, whereas washing machine ownership reached at 72% in 2019 before experiencing a fell in 1980.

Turning to number of hours per household, the figure followed a different pattern. Although it initially fell , it subsequently, remained stable before ending the period at 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for the three appliances and the housework hours. The overview is clear and identifies the main trends (upward for appliances, downward for hours). However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting. For example, the text states that refrigerator ownership remained the same after 1980, which is accurate, but the description of the washing machine trend is confusing, mentioning a 'fell' in 1980 that is not clearly supported by the graph. Additionally, the comparison of the vacuum cleaner and washing machine rates is slightly imprecise. Overall, it addresses the task well but lacks precision in data interpretation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'At the beginning', 'Subsequently', and 'Turning to' are used to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is appropriate. However, the flow within the third paragraph is slightly disjointed due to the confusing description of the washing machine trend. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'upward trend', 'downward trend', and 'remained stable'. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'the figures showed an diverge' (should be 'divergence') and 'experiencing a fell' (should be 'a fall'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. The student relies on fairly standard descriptors throughout the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership remained dominant' (should be 'remaining'), 'remained same' (missing 'the'), and 'reached at 100%' (unnecessary preposition). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some awkward phrasings. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the accuracy of verb tenses and prepositions needs improvement.
