Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, you state that refrigerator ownership was 'almost 0' in 1920, but the chart shows it starting at roughly 0% and rising, yet later you claim it was 50% in 1920, which contradicts the visual data. The summary of the housework trend is better, but the overall analysis lacks a clear overview or a cohesive synthesis of the relationship between the two charts. To improve, ensure data points are read accurately and focus on highlighting the most significant trends rather than listing every detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, and there is a lack of variety in linking words. For example, the repetition of 'in 1920' and 'almost' makes the flow feel somewhat disjointed. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the former', 'this trend') is used to connect ideas more fluidly across sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'increases', 'decreases', and 'machines'. There are also some issues with word choice and spelling, such as 'comparetively', 'refrigrators', and 'domestic use thing'. To improve, you should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'a significant decline'. Additionally, focus on correct spelling and using collocations more naturally to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Vacuum cleaner were', 'Washing machine get a down fall'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'as it was not a domestic use thing'). Punctuation is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound. Practising the use of complex sentences with correct subordination will help you achieve a higher score.
