Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line charts present the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, from having almost no refrigerator in all households in intial year in the data to maximum houses after 1980's having refrigerator, the trend changed a lot. All houses had vacuum cleaners after 2000's. Proportion of houses having washing machines kept fluctuating a little throughout the data. The quantity of time spent on housework in households showed a decreasing trend over the years.
In 1920, almost no households had refrigerator, 30 had vacuum cleaners and 40 had washing machines. For refrigerators, the data shows continuous increase in households with refrigerators with 90 in 1960 before all households having refrigerators from 1980 to 2019. Households having vacuum cleaners also increased to 90 in 1980 before increasing to 100 in 2000 and remaining constant till 2019. Households with washing machines increased to 70 in 1960 before falling to around 55 in 1980 and then increasing back to 70 in 2000 before finally increasing to around 72 in 2019.
The second data showing the number of hours spent on housework in household starts from 50 hours in 1920 and then declining in a slope to 20 in 1960 and decreasing further to around 15 hours in 1980 and remaining their till 2000 before finally decreasing to almost 9 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key features from the charts. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. However, the report could be improved by using more precise language when describing the data. For instance, you refer to '30' and '40' without specifying that these are percentages, which is essential for clarity. Additionally, while the main features are highlighted, the comparison between the two charts could be more explicitly linked to show how the rise in technology directly correlates with the reduction in time spent on housework.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the appliance trends to the housework time. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall' and 'In 1920', to guide the reader. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and there is a lack of variety in linking words. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') to connect sentences and ideas more fluidly, rather than relying on simple chronological transitions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuating', 'constant', and 'declining'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'households' and 'increased'. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'intial year' (spelling error) and 'remaining their' (should be 'there'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and ensure accurate collocation. For example, instead of saying 'the trend changed a lot', you could use 'the trend underwent a significant transformation'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'almost no refrigerator' (should be plural), 'after 1980's' (incorrect apostrophe usage), and 'all households having refrigerators' (fragmented structure). There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring they are error-free will help you achieve a higher band score.
