IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graphs illustrate the percentage of households that owned three electrical appliances and number of hours spent doing housework per week in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, the percentage of electrical appliances increased during the period, especially refrigerators or vacuum cleaners. At the same time the number of hours spent on housework decreased.
In 1920, around 40% of homes had a washing machine, while 30% had a vacuum cleaner. No household had a refrigerator at that time. In 1940, the figure had increased around 60% for washing machines, 50% for refrigerator and around 40% for vacuum cleaner.
In 1960, refrigerator ownership increased quickly, around 90%, while vacuum cleaner reached 70%. Washing machines also increased around 70%. In 1980 refrigerator become the most common appliance around 100%, while the vacuum cleaner is around 90%. The ownership of washing machines decreased around 65% before increasing again to 70% in 2000 and around 75% in 2019.
The second graph shows that people spent around 50 hours on housework per week in 1920. The number of hours fell down around 35 in 1940 and 20 hours in 1960. Then it dropped around 15 hours in 1980 and 2000, before reaching around 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key data points to illustrate trends. The main features, such as the general increase in appliance ownership and the inverse decline in housework hours, are well-identified. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the two graphs, such as linking the rise in appliance ownership to the reduction in time spent on housework. While the data is generally accurate, some figures are presented in a slightly repetitive manner. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by appliance and time period. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In 1920', 'In 1960', and 'At the same time', which help guide the reader through the data. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied to improve the overall cohesion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets, ensuring the information is easy to follow and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with accurate use of terms like 'households', 'electrical appliances', and 'ownership'. There is some attempt to use varied language, such as 'increased quickly' and 'reached', but the range is somewhat limited. Some phrasing is slightly repetitive, and there are minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'refrigerator become the most common appliance'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to trends and data reporting, such as 'surged', 'plummeted', or 'fluctuated', to demonstrate a wider and more precise lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the figure had increased around 60% for washing machines' (missing 'to') and 'refrigerator become' (tense error). Additionally, there are minor issues with prepositions and articles, such as 'in 1940, the figure had increased around 60%'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing statistical changes.
