Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the data reporting is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For instance, stating that 40% of the population used washing machines in 1920 is a misinterpretation of the chart, and the claim that vacuum cleaners were not in use until the 1940s is factually incorrect based on the provided data. While the overview is present, the lack of precision in data selection and the failure to clearly contrast the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework hours prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. Transitions between sentences are sometimes abrupt, and the logical flow between the appliance data and the housework hours could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure lacks the sophisticated linking required for higher bands. Paragraphing is used, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to better group related information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'famous', 'boosted', and 'went up'. Some word choices are unnatural, such as 'electric instruments' instead of 'electrical appliances' and 'the report of washing machine' instead of 'the percentage of households with washing machines'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are instances of incorrect collocation that hinder the professional tone expected in an Academic Task 1 response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('were decrease', 'had been using'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('time of that appliances helped'). Subject-verb agreement is also inconsistent. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent tense usage when describing historical data and refining sentence construction for better accuracy.
