Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graphs show the percentage of households with electrical appliances and the number of hours of housework per week from 1920 to 2019

Overall, the use of electrical appliances increased over time, while the number of hours spent on housework decreased.

As illustrated, in 1920,about 40%of homes had a washing machine,30% had a vacuum cleaner, and almost no homes had a refrigerator. By 1960, refrigerator were in about 90% of homes , vacuum cleaners in 70%, and washing machines in around 70%. In 2019 refrigerator and vacuum cleaners reached almost 100%, while washing machines were used in a out 75% of households

The second graph shows that housework hours fell from about 50 hours per week in 1920 to only 10 hours per week in 2019. The biggest drop happened between 1920 and 1960.

Conclusion:as more households bought electrical appliances, the time spent on housework became much lower.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of both charts and makes relevant comparisons. However, it falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum requirement, which impacts the overall development of the response. While the key trends are identified, the analysis could be more detailed to fully satisfy the task requirements. The inclusion of a 'Conclusion' section is unnecessary in an Academic Task 1, as the overview should be integrated into the introduction or summary. To improve, ensure you meet the word count and provide a more comprehensive synthesis of the data rather than listing figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, with one focusing on appliances and the other on housework hours. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'As illustrated', and 'The second graph shows', which help guide the reader. However, the flow is somewhat mechanical, and the transition between the two graphs could be smoother. The use of a 'Conclusion' label is unconventional for this task type and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more cohesive integration of ideas would enhance the score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends and figures clearly. Words like 'increased', 'decreased', and 'reached' are used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor errors in punctuation and spacing, such as 'Overall, the' and 'a out', which suggest a need for more careful proofreading. To reach a higher band, incorporate more varied vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'surged', 'plummeted', or 'gradual decline', and ensure accurate spelling and spacing throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in 1920,about 40%of homes'), subject-verb agreement issues ('refrigerator were'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after commas). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points. To improve, focus on consistent subject-verb agreement and ensure proper punctuation and spacing between words and sentences.
