cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two charts display the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in a country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it ca be seen that as the time passes, the proportion of households with electrical appliances increases, the following trend got reversed in the case of hours spent on housework every week.

However, looking at the percentage of households having electronic items. In terms of vacuum cleaners, the constant increase had observed in the percentage, having almost 20% every two decades, reaching at the top, at 100 percent in 2000 and then remained constant. On the other hand, the exact pattern was seen in terms of the refrigerator. It started from 0 percent and had a sharp rise, increased to 50 percent in 1940, 90 percent in 1960 and reached 100 percent in 1980 and then remained constant. Whereas, coming to the washing machine, it started at 40 percent, rose to 70 percent in 1960, then dropped to 65 percent in 1980, and then increased, concluding at 75 percent in 2019.

Now, referencing the hours spent on housework on a weekly basis. It can be seen that as the time passes, people became too busy with work, spending less time on housework. In 1920, 50 hours were spent weekly on housework, which decreased to 20 percent in 1960, then a slight decrease was seen, reached to 15 percent in 2000 and then fell to a low of 10 percent in 2019.

Lexical Resource6.5
Grammatical Range and Accuracy6.5
Overall7.0

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key features from both charts. You successfully identified the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. However, the analysis of the washing machine data is slightly inaccurate in its description of the trend, and the final paragraph incorrectly labels the housework data as 'percent' rather than 'hours'. While the main features are highlighted, more precise comparisons between the appliances would have strengthened the response. Overall, the information is well-selected and the main trends are clearly communicated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Whereas', and 'In terms of' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the two body paragraphs could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets, which helps the reader follow the information easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'constant increase', and 'sharp rise'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the following trend got reversed' and 'referencing the hours', which are slightly unnatural. Additionally, there is a confusion between 'percent' and 'hours' in the final paragraph, which impacts precision. While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and some phrasing is repetitive. Improving your control over collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it ca be seen' (typo), 'the constant increase had observed' (incorrect passive voice), and 'reached to 15 percent' (unnecessary preposition). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. You have a good grasp of basic structures, but more attention to verb tenses and passive voice construction is needed to ensure accuracy in your reporting.
