Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While the response identifies the main trends, the data reporting is inaccurate and lacks sufficient detail. For example, the claim that refrigerator ownership was 100% in 1920 is factually incorrect based on the provided chart. The description of the housework hours is also vague and lacks precise data points. To improve, you must ensure all data is accurately transcribed from the charts and provide a clear overview that highlights the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response lacks paragraphing, which is essential for a clear structure in an IELTS Task 1 report. The flow of information is somewhat mechanical, relying on repetitive sentence structures like 'in the year...'. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas or contrast the two charts effectively. To improve, you should group related information into distinct paragraphs—one for the appliances and one for the housework hours—and use transition words such as 'conversely', 'meanwhile', or 'in contrast' to improve the logical progression of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use the same phrases, such as 'percentage of households' and 'electrical appliances'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or precise terminology related to data description. For instance, instead of saying 'was about 60 to 90%', you could use more precise descriptors like 'fluctuated between' or 'showed a steady upward trend'. To achieve a higher band, try to vary your vocabulary and use more sophisticated reporting verbs and nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('the percentage of household... is'), missing articles, and incorrect preposition usage. Sentence structures are simple and repetitive, lacking the variety of complex sentences required for higher bands. There are also punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after periods. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and proofreading for minor errors like missing articles or incorrect pluralization.
