Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends for appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the reporting of data is sometimes imprecise (e.g., 'almost zero' for 1920, 'every house' for 1980). While the overview is present, it lacks a clear synthesis of the relationship between the two trends—specifically, the correlation between increased appliance ownership and the reduction in housework time. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited more accurately and that the overview highlights the inverse relationship between the two sets of data more explicitly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for the appliances and housework time respectively. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are occasionally abrupt, such as the jump from the refrigerator to the vacuum cleaner. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between the appliances and the time spent on housework could be better signposted. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends (e.g., 'increased rapidly', 'dramatically decreased', 'gradual increase'). However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'changing in buying electrical products' instead of 'changes in the ownership of electrical appliances' and 'in end of time period'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and avoid grammatical errors in word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder readability. Issues include missing articles ('in 1960 90 percent houses'), incorrect verb tenses ('in 1920 used by 40 percent'), and awkward sentence construction ('in the last both were universal in end of time period'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
