IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line charts illustrate the change in ownership of electrical appliances and the rate of usage per house in a country over the time period 1920 to 2019 respectively.
Overall, all the utilization of the appliances such as, washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner raised almost steadily in the mentioned decade, while only percentage of washing machine quite plateaued after 1960.
The quickest increment of usage was reflected in refrigerator, a quick shift 100% within the time period. Similarly the vacuum cleaner also reaching maximum within the same time with a slower pace.
A mix trend was observed in washing machine. Similar like washing machine and vacuum cleaner, it increased from 40 to 60 within 1920 to 1960, but almost plateaued after that to nearly 70%. Finally, the 2nd graph shows that total number of housework per week is decreased 40% from 50 to 10 hour per week which reflects the increased usage of electrical machines within the time, aligning with the first graph

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You highlighted the key features, such as the rise in appliance ownership and the inverse relationship with housework hours. However, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly inaccurate; you stated it plateaued at 70% after 1960, whereas the data shows it reaching 70% by 1980 and continuing to rise. Additionally, the term 'quickest increment' is a bit vague. To improve, ensure you provide more precise data points and avoid generalizations that contradict the visual evidence provided in the charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'Similarly' and 'Finally' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the first and second graph is somewhat abrupt. The paragraphing is functional, but the flow could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases to show the relationship between the two charts, such as 'This inverse trend is further supported by the second graph, which illustrates...'. The referencing is generally clear, but the structure of the final sentence is slightly cluttered.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'utilization', 'plateaued', and 'increment'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'quick shift 100%' is not natural phrasing, and 'A mix trend' should be 'A mixed trend'. You also use 'raised' (an intransitive verb error) instead of 'rose'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring your collocations are natural, such as 'a significant increase' rather than 'quickest increment'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For instance, 'all the utilization... raised' is incorrect; 'rose' would be appropriate. There are also issues with articles ('the percentage of washing machine') and prepositions ('within 1920 to 1960' should be 'between 1920 and 1960'). While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of time prepositions.
