Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line charts illustrate the fluctuations in possession of electrical items and the quantity of time consumed while doing household chores in a particular country from the year 1920 to 2019.

overall, it is evident that, proportion of houses with refrigerators represented the highest trend, while the expenditure on washing machines was lowest in 99 years. Whereas, the amount of hours spent per week in housework plummeted in almost a century.

To begin with, the washing machines bought by the people showed the least amount of growth over 10 decades. Furthermore, 30% of households had the vacuum cleaner in 1920, which experienced an upward trend with 100% houses in the country having it in the year 2019. Moreover, the refrigerator started with 0% in the year 1920 and recorded the highest figure in the year 2019, now 100% of the households have the refrigerators.

Subsequently, more than 45 hours were spent in household work in the year 1920, which consistently declined to 20% in the year 1960, finally experienced a downward trend in the year 2019 with 0% housework done in a household.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, but there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, you state that housework hours declined to '0%' in 2019, which is a misreading of the graph (it shows a decline to approximately 10 hours). Additionally, describing the refrigerator as starting at '0%' in 1920 is technically correct, but the phrasing 'now 100% of the households have the refrigerators' is slightly repetitive. While you identify the main trends, the misinterpretation of the final data point for housework significantly impacts the accuracy of the summary. To improve, ensure that data points are read precisely and that comparisons are made more clearly between the appliances and the time spent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Subsequently'. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used to connect ideas that do not flow naturally. The referencing is generally clear, but the progression of ideas within the final paragraph is hindered by the factual inaccuracy regarding the housework hours. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details, which helps the reader follow the structure of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'expenditure', and 'plummeted'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'expenditure on washing machines' is used incorrectly, as the chart refers to 'ownership' or 'possession', not financial spending. Similarly, 'quantity of time consumed' is slightly unnatural; 'amount of time spent' is more standard. While you attempt some less common vocabulary, the inaccuracies in word choice occasionally affect the precision of your description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'proportion of houses' (missing an article: 'the proportion'), '100% houses' (should be '100% of houses'), and 'finally experienced a downward trend' (which lacks a subject or proper connection to the previous clause). Punctuation is generally functional, but the misuse of articles and some awkward phrasing occasionally distracts the reader. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score in this criterion.
