cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 8.5)

The line graph illustrates the percentage of households that owned three electrical appliances (a washing machine, a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner) as well as the number of hours of housework per household per week between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it is readily apparent that the ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners increased significantly throughout the period, while the washing machine experienced some fluctuations. In contrast, the number of hours spent on housework decreased steadily.

At the beginning of the period, the washing machine had the highest ownership rate at approximately 40%, after which it rose to around 70% in 1960. Although the figure fell slightly to about 60% in 1980, it recovered to 70% by 2019. Meanwhile, the proportion of households with a vacuum cleaner increased dramatically from 30% in 1920 to almost 100% in 2000, after which it remained virtually unchanged until the end of the period

.

The refrigerator, which was owned by almost no households in 1920, grew rapidly to around 90% in 1980 before reaching 100% in 2000, where it remained stable until 2019. As the ownership of electrical appliances increased, the number of hours of housework fell from 50 hours per week in 1920 to around 20 hours in 1960, after which it declined gradually to approximately 10 hours by 2019
