Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task, identifying the main trends for both appliance ownership and housework hours. You successfully highlighted the inverse relationship between the two datasets. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in data reporting. For example, you stated that housework hours dropped to '10%' in 2019, whereas the graph shows a drop to 10 hours. Additionally, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing, as the data shows a rise to 70% in 1960 followed by a decline, which you captured, but the phrasing could be more precise. Overall, the key features are selected, but the accuracy of the data interpretation needs more attention to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'whereas', 'furthermore', and 'over the next few decades' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the lack of consistent punctuation (e.g., missing spaces after commas and inconsistent capitalisation) makes the text feel less professional and slightly harder to follow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring standard paragraph structure will help improve the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'substantially', 'dramatically', and 'consistent increase'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'number of hours of housework' (which should be 'the number of hours') and 'almost none of them owned refrigerator' (missing an article). There are also issues with basic spelling and punctuation, such as 'house work' instead of 'housework'. To improve, focus on using articles (a/the) correctly and expanding your range of reporting verbs beyond 'increased' or 'showed'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences with 'whereas' and 'while', there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Common issues include missing articles ('owned washing machine'), incorrect verb tenses, and inconsistent capitalisation at the start of sentences. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after commas and periods. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on sentence-level accuracy, particularly subject-verb agreement and article usage, will significantly improve your score.
