Overall Band Score: 6.5 · Cambridge IELTS 16 · 2026-08-02
IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
There are two line graphs, one shows the percentage of households with electrical appliances like washing machines, refrigerator, and vacuum cleaners ranging from zero to hundred for the years 1920 to 2019, the other displays the number of hours of housework per week, per household ranging from zero to hundred for the same years.
Overall, the percentage of households using these electrical appliances significantly increase. However, the graph for number of hours of housework demonstrates an overall decrease as the years go by.
The line graph for refrigerators has a decreasing gradient until 1980 by starting off from zero going up to a hundred percent then the percentage stays equal through out. The vacuum cleaners start off in 1920 by thirty percent and end increasing to a hundred percent in 2000 and remain at that number until 2019. However, washing machines follow an unusual trend as they hike to seventy percent in 1960 but decline to about sixty-one percent in 1980 but then increase to approximately seventy-two percent. Moving on to the second graph, it can be analyzed that the number of housework hours decrease from fifty in 1920 to ten in 2019.
In conclusion, by comparing the two graphs we can see that as the years went by the number of appliances increased substantially whereas the number of hours depleted.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You successfully identified the main features, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework hours. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, you stated that refrigerators started at zero and went to a hundred, whereas the graph shows them starting at zero and reaching 100% by 1980. Additionally, describing the refrigerator trend as having a 'decreasing gradient' is mathematically incorrect, as the line is clearly increasing. More careful attention to the specific data points and their direction is needed to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Moving on to', which help the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the description of the two graphs. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between sentences within paragraphs is smoother to avoid a list-like feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significantly increase', 'unusual trend', and 'substantially'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'depleted' to describe the reduction in hours, which is not the most natural collocation in this context. You also use 'hike' in a way that is slightly informal for an academic report. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'declined steadily', and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'one shows... the other displays' (comma splice) and 'start off in 1920 by thirty percent' (preposition error). There are also issues with tense consistency and article usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing data points on a graph.
