Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts illustrate the adoption of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in a nation from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, adoption of electrical appliances has increased over the period, especially refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, which are 100 percent. The ownership of refrigerators faced a dramatic rise in comparison with others. The use of washing machines slightly fluctuated, and it is the least adopted electrical appliance. Likewise, the number of hours of housework per week has also declined.

In 1920, the proportion of households owning refrigerators was almost zero, whereas 40 percent owned washing machines and 30 percent had vacuum cleaners. The use of refrigerators soared dramatically and reached 100 percent in 1980. An almost similar proportion of people used all three appliances in 1940. While every household owned a refrigerator and vacuum cleaner by the year 2000, washing machine penetration reached its highest proportion of around 75 percent in 2019.

Similarly, number of hours of housework per week was around 50, which decreased drastically and ended at 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered both charts and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework hours. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting of the data. For instance, you stated that vacuum cleaners reached 100 percent by 2000, but the chart shows they reached this level by 1980. Additionally, describing the washing machine trend as 'slightly fluctuated' is imprecise, as it shows a clear, steady growth pattern. More careful attention to the specific data points is required to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'likewise', and 'similarly' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally smooth, moving from a general overview to specific details. To improve, ensure that your paragraphing is balanced; the second paragraph is significantly longer than the first. Additionally, ensure that your referencing is precise; for example, when you mention 'all three appliances', ensure the reader is clear about which specific years or trends you are referencing to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'dramatic rise', 'soared dramatically', and 'penetration' are used appropriately in the context of describing trends. There is some repetition of basic structures, and you could improve by using more varied synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' (e.g., 'climb', 'plummet', 'gradual growth'). The word choice is generally accurate, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to data interpretation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While every household owned a refrigerator... washing machine penetration reached...'. Most sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'number of hours of housework per week was around 50', which should include an article ('the number'). Another example is 'which are 100 percent', which is slightly awkward; 'which reached 100 percent' would be more natural. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and these minor errors do not impede the reader's understanding.
