Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two charts display the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in a country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it ca be seen that as the time passes, the proportion of households with electrical appliances increases, , the following trend got reversed in the case of hours spent on housework every week.

However, looking at the percentage of households having electronic items. In terms of vacuum cleaners, the constant increase had observed in the percentage, having almost 20% every two decades, reaching at the top, at 100 percent in 2000 and then remained constant. On the other hand, the exact pattern was seen in terms of the refrigerator. It started from 0 percent and had a sharp rise, increased to 50 percent in 1940, 90 percent in 1960 and reached 100 percent in 1980 and then remained constant. Whereas, coming to the washing machine, it started at 40 percent, rose to 70 percent in 1960, then dropped to 65 percent in 1980, and then increased, concluding at 75 percent in 2019.

Now, referencing the hours spent on housework on a weekly basis. It can be seen that as time passes, people became too busy with work, spending less time on housework. In 1920, 50 hours were spent weekly on housework, which decreased to 20 percent in 1960, then a slight decrease was seen, reached to 15 percent in 2000 and then fell to a low of 10 percent in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, you mention '20 percent' for housework hours in 1960, but the chart indicates 20 hours. Additionally, the phrasing 'the following trend got reversed' is slightly imprecise. To improve, ensure you distinguish clearly between percentages and raw units (hours) and focus on making more precise comparisons between the categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the other hand' and 'Whereas' to signal shifts in focus. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical phrasing, such as 'Now, referencing the hours spent'. The use of referencing is sometimes repetitive, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and natural to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'constant increase', and 'sharp rise'. However, there are some word choice errors, such as 'the following trend got reversed' and 'reaching at the top'. There is also a lack of variety in reporting verbs. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive structures. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it ca be seen' (typo), 'the constant increase had observed' (incorrect passive voice), and 'reaching at the top'. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the exact pattern was seen in terms of the refrigerator'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct passive voice construction will significantly improve your accuracy.
