Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify the general upward trend for appliances and the downward trend for housework, you fail to provide a clear overview or highlight the most significant comparisons between the two datasets. The description of the data is often imprecise, such as saying ownership 'almost remains there' or 'fluctuate there', which lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band. To improve, ensure you group data logically and provide specific data points to support your observations rather than relying on vague descriptions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, and there is a lack of variety in linking words. For example, the repetition of 'The number of' at the start of several sentences makes the flow feel repetitive. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as 'it almost remains there', where the pronoun 'it' does not clearly refer back to a specific noun. Improving the use of cohesive devices like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in contrast' would enhance the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. You rely on basic verbs like 'increases', 'decreased', and 'stable'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'number of time consumed' (should be 'amount of time') and 'washing machine users' (the chart refers to household ownership, not users). Some phrasing is awkward, such as 'the decrease further happen'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary related to trends and data, such as 'soared', 'plateaued', or 'a significant decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The charts below illustrates'), incorrect tense usage (e.g., 'the housework were stabled'), and awkward sentence construction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and sentence boundaries. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage is essential for improvement.
