Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly inaccurate regarding the 1980s data point, and the summary of the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner trends lacks precision. While the overall trend is clear, the response would benefit from a more detailed comparison between the two charts to better highlight the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on housework. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to provide a clearer summary of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure for this task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'it increases constantly' and 'over the time' are used frequently, which limits the flow of the text. Additionally, the transition between the description of the appliances and the housework hours is abrupt. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the lack of varied linking words and occasional awkward phrasing makes the connection between sentences feel somewhat disjointed at times.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors, such as 'refridgerator' and 'useage', and some awkward collocations like 'households works'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying heavily on basic verbs like 'increases' and 'decreases'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use more sophisticated synonyms and precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'a significant downward trend'. The current lexical range is sufficient to convey the main points but does not demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The charts displays', 'washing machine was used'), incorrect verb tenses ('is reveals'), and missing articles. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing historical data. The complexity of the sentences is limited, and more attention to punctuation and sentence construction would enhance the overall accuracy.
