Student answer (Band 5.5)

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task by comparing the decline in housework hours with the rise in appliance ownership. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, you mention '1029' instead of 1929, and the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed accurately and that the relationship between the two charts is explicitly linked throughout the response. The summary is generally effective, but more precise data selection would strengthen the analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'simultaneously', 'on the other hand', and 'while', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Overview, the time spent...' which should be 'Overall, the time spent...'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the connection between the appliances and the time periods becomes slightly muddled. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transformation', 'plunged', and 'proportion'. However, there are several instances of word choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'poured in housework' (instead of 'spent on') and 'started to gradually rose' (which contains a grammatical error in the verb form). There is also a minor spelling error ('1029' instead of 1929). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary is used in the correct grammatical form. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the another line graph', 'every house was equipped with Refrigerator' (missing articles), and 'started to gradually rose' (incorrect verb tense). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure in the final paragraph is somewhat fragmented. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
