Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line charts below demonstrate a difference in purchasing electronic gadgets and the overall duration of household chores from 1920 to 2019 in a nation.

Overall, the graph highlights how the country's citizens spend less time completing their household chores, with an increase in the use of electrical appliances.

To begin with, in the year 1920, it is clearly seen that around 30% of households had vacuum cleaners and 40% had washing machines. While none of them used refrigerators, that being said, these households were contributing almost 50 hours of their entire week's time doing household activities.

Fast forward to the year 2019, the trend takes a huge leap. Every two decades, the use of electronic gadgets has been showing a rise in owning some or the other device and cutting down the hours for doing monotonous housework.

Between 1920 and 2019, there was no downward trend in increasing hours of work but only in purchasing new gadgets. In summary, there's a direct relationship between the two. Whenever the ownership of a washing machine, refrigerator, or vacuum cleaner has increased, the hours of work have decreased.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a general overview of the trends but fails to report key data points effectively. While you mention 1920 and 2019, you omit significant intermediate data points or specific comparisons between the appliances. The description of the trends is somewhat vague; for instance, stating 'the trend takes a huge leap' lacks the precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, you must select and highlight specific figures (e.g., the peak of refrigerator ownership or the specific decline in hours) to support your summary. The analysis of the relationship between appliance ownership and housework hours is a good attempt at synthesis, but it needs more concrete data to be fully convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Fast forward to', and 'In summary'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or informal, such as 'that being said' and 'Fast forward to'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is adequate, though the flow between the data description and the concluding synthesis could be more tightly integrated to ensure the reader follows the argument without effort.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'monotonous', 'direct relationship', and 'electronic gadgets'. However, some word choices are slightly imprecise or informal for an academic report, such as 'some or the other device' and 'huge leap'. To reach a higher band, aim for more precise academic collocations. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands. Spelling is accurate throughout the text, which is a positive aspect of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'there was no downward trend in increasing hours of work', which is confusingly phrased. Additionally, the sentence 'While none of them used refrigerators, that being said, these households were contributing...' is slightly awkward in its construction. While your meaning is generally clear and errors do not impede communication, you need to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and ensure that your phrasing is concise and grammatically sound to achieve a higher score.
