cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The line graph illustrates the employment proportion in three diverse sectors, which include public sector, private sector and own business of economy in Great Britain from 2000 to 2010.

Overall, it is evident that public sector and self-employed workers increased over the period. In contrast private sectors fell continuously meanwhile public sector recorded the highest figure for employment whereas self employed has the least proportion throughout the period.

Looking at the more details, public sector grew from 38 in first years then rose sharply from 40 to around 50 in 2005 then 45 in 2006 before dipping to around at approximately 57 by the end of the period. Similarly self employed grew from 18 in initial year to reach of 20 in after two years then 18 in 2004 before declined at about 30 in the final year respectively.

In contrast private sector fell continuously around 48 in first year, decreased to 40 in 2003 then decreased dramatically to reached at the bottom at about just 20 in 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0

The response fails to address the task prompt entirely. The instructions ask for a summary of electrical appliance ownership and housework time between 1920 and 2019. However, the student has written a report about employment sectors in Great Britain from 2000 to 2010. Because the content is completely irrelevant to the provided charts, the task achievement is severely compromised. While the student attempts to report on trends, the data described does not exist in the source material, making it impossible to evaluate the accuracy of the information against the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Overall', which helps the flow of the text. However, because the content is entirely unrelated to the prompt, the logical progression is undermined by the fact that the information being linked is factually disconnected from the task. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the lack of relevance to the source material prevents a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss trends, such as 'increased', 'fell continuously', 'rose sharply', and 'dipping'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'employment proportion' and 'own business of economy', which sound unnatural. While the vocabulary is adequate for describing a graph, the misuse of terms in the context of the actual prompt (which is about appliances, not employment) limits the effectiveness of the language used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout, such as 'reached at the bottom at about just 20' and 'declined at about 30'. The use of articles is inconsistent, and there are issues with preposition usage. While the errors do not always impede communication, the frequency of these slips, combined with the lack of control over complex structures, keeps the score in the mid-range.
