Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework time. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state the refrigerator 'surpassed both washing machine and refrigerator' in 1940, which is confusing, and you incorrectly label the housework time units as '20%' and '10%' instead of hours. While the main features are highlighted, the lack of precision in data interpretation prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure that the data points are accurately transcribed from the charts and that units of measurement are correctly identified.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'To start with', and 'Similarly' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and minor errors in referencing. For example, the transition 'after this it remained stable' is clear, but the overall progression could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets (appliances and housework time). To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that referencing is consistently precise.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are several instances of repetition and minor inaccuracies. You use 'amount' twice in the first sentence and 'significantly' twice in the second paragraph. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'made up highest group trend' and 'with the little fluctuations'. While you attempt to use descriptive language, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for trends and changes, such as 'soared', 'plummeted', or 'gradual decline', and ensure that word choices are precise and natural in an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The given line graphs illustrates' (subject-verb agreement), 'throughout the period 1920 and 2019' (preposition error), and 'reaming stable' (spelling/word choice). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and tense consistency. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall clarity of the writing. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct punctuation and grammatical accuracy.
