IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two line graphs illustrate how the ownership of electrical appliances changed between 1920 and 2019, and the number of hours of housework spent per week per household over 100 years.
Overall, the percentage of households with electrical appliances experienced an upward trend, while the amount of time spent doing housework showed a gradual decline throughout the period.
In 1920, the washing machine ranked first among all the other appliances, accounting for 40%, followed by 30% of the vacuum cleaner, while the refrigerator hit a low of 0%. After 40 years, refrigerator ownership rose significantly to 90% and overtook the percentages of both vacuum cleaners and washing machines. By the end of the period, ownership of both the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner peaked at 100%, while the percentage of washing machines stood at 75.
It is evident that at the beginning of the period, the percentages of electrical appliances were low, number of hours of housework per week accounted for 50 hours, but gradually, this value began to drop, and by 2019 when electrical appliances were in continuous use, people only worked for 10 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends for both appliance ownership and housework hours. You have effectively selected key data points, such as the initial 1920 figures and the final 2019 statistics, to support your summary. The comparison between the rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework time is clear and well-integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are precise; for instance, you mentioned '75' for washing machines without specifying the unit (percentage), and the description of the refrigerator's rise could be more detailed regarding the specific timeframes provided in the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general trends to specific data comparisons. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'In 1920,' and 'By the end of the period' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the discussion of appliances and the discussion of housework in the final paragraph is slightly abrupt. Using a more sophisticated linking phrase to connect the inverse relationship between these two variables would improve the flow and cohesion of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'upward trend,' 'gradual decline,' and 'overtook.' There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally successful. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and phrasing, such as 'number of hours of housework per week accounted for 50 hours,' which is slightly awkward. Improving the variety of verbs used to describe trends (e.g., 'surged,' 'plummeted,' 'stabilized') would enhance the lexical sophistication of your writing and help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'followed by 30% of the vacuum cleaner,' which should be 'followed by the vacuum cleaner at 30%.' Additionally, the final sentence is a bit run-on and would benefit from being split into two separate sentences or using a more formal subordinating conjunction. Overall, your control of grammar is good, and the errors present do not impede the reader's understanding of the data.
