IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The two line graphs illustrate the changes in the ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent on domestic tasks in a particular country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the proportion of households owning all electrical appliances increased over the period. By contrast, the average number of hours spent on housework fell continually throughout the period.
Looking at the details, the percentage of washing machines in the initial year was around 40%, compared with 30% for vacuum cleaners, whereas refrigerators were not virtually present at that time. In 1940, washing machine ownership increased to approximately 60%, while refrigerator ownership rose sharply to around 55%. Meanwhile, 50% of households owned vacuum cleaners. Refrigerators became almost universal in 1980 and remained steady until the end of the period. Similarly, vacuum cleaner ownership increased steadily and became universal by 2000, remaining at the same level until 2019. In contrast, the figure for washing machines grew marginally from 60% in 1940 to 70%, then declined modestly in 1980 to around 65%, before rising steadily to reach approximately 75% in 2019.
The number of hours spent on domestic work decreased dramatically from 50 hours in 1920 to 35 hours in 1946. It then gradually declined to reach 10 hours per week by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and selected key features to illustrate the changes over the century. The comparison between the rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours is well-integrated. You have accurately identified the main trends, such as the near-universal ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners by the end of the period, and the significant drop in domestic work hours. The data is presented clearly, and the information is logically grouped, meeting the requirements for a Band 8 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction and overview to detailed analysis of the appliances and then the housework hours. Cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'Looking at the details', 'Meanwhile', and 'Similarly' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow between sentences is smooth, ensuring that the information is easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely. Phrases like 'virtually present', 'remained steady', 'grew marginally', and 'declined dramatically' demonstrate a good command of descriptive language suitable for a data-reporting task. There is a natural use of collocations, and the vocabulary is varied enough to avoid repetition. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or nuanced expressions could elevate the response further, but the current level is accurate and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, including subordinate clauses and comparative constructions. The grammar is generally accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. There is a high level of control over punctuation and sentence structure. Minor slips are rare and do not impede communication. The use of tense is consistent and appropriate for describing historical data. Your ability to combine simple and complex sentences effectively contributes to the overall clarity and professional tone of the report.
