Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given line graph illustrates information about the proportion of household with electrical appliances such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner from 1920 to 2019. While the other graph depicts the number of hours of housework : washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning per week in a household.

Overall, at the beginning washing machine was used more followed by vacuum cleaner. Refrigerator was owned least. However by the end of 2019, individuals depend substantially on refrigerator and vacuum cleaner. On the other hand number of housework has plummeted dramatically.

It is evident from the chart that Refrigerator held 40% in 1920 which has risen till 1960 steadily and experienced a slight fall of less than 10% in 1980. In the following years it has started to increase and reached to a figure of 65. Refrigerator has demonstrated a rapid increase although it started from least used electrical appliances to heavily dependent in it with no house without refrigerator with 100% till 2000 and no purchase further. It is noticeable from the graph that vacuum cleaner rose and reached the position that every household own it. Conversely the hours spend on housework fell dramatically from 50 hours per week in 1920 to almost 10 hours a week by 2019. TO

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the analysis is inconsistent. The description of the refrigerator trend is confusing and contains contradictory information (e.g., stating it reached 100% by 2000 while also mentioning a fall in 1980). The summary of the housework graph is also underdeveloped, as it fails to distinguish between the three specific types of housework mentioned in the prompt, instead grouping them into a single figure. To improve, ensure that data points are reported accurately and that all categories presented in the visual data are addressed clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by awkward transitions and unclear referencing. For example, the phrase 'While the other graph depicts...' at the end of the first paragraph is a sentence fragment. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as 'On the other hand' which does not logically contrast the preceding sentence. The progression of ideas within the third paragraph is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the timeline of the refrigerator ownership trend. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each sentence follows logically from the last will enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Phrases like 'heavily dependent in it' and 'no purchase further' are unnatural. There is also some repetition of basic terms. While the student attempts to use more sophisticated vocabulary like 'plummeted' and 'demonstrated', the overall control is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations correctly (e.g., 'dependent on' rather than 'dependent in') and avoid awkward phrasing that obscures the meaning of the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'proportion of household'), incorrect verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'number of housework has plummeted'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with a colon used incorrectly in the introduction and a stray 'TO' at the end of the text. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors would be beneficial.
