cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart illustrates the amount of time spent on housework per week as well as the percentage of households that owned three types of electronic appliances, which are washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners in one nation.

Overall, the amount of time people spent on housework declined over the entire period. Meanwhile families who owned domestic appliances increased significantly for all three items.

The trend for three household equipment varied. The washing machine started with 40% in 1920 occupying the top position but showed a slower growth, finishing at over 70% in 2019. In contrast, the refrigerator was owned by none in 1920 but it increased dramatically, reaching 100% in 1980 and continued. Similarly, the vacuum cleaner ownership was at 30% in 1920 which rose sharply to 100% in 2000 and maintained the position till 2019.

Whilst, time spent in housework followed a downward trend. In 1920, 50 hours per week was spent in housework, which declined to 20 hours in 1960. After that, it declined steadily and was at 10hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main trends for both the appliance ownership and the time spent on housework. The overview clearly highlights the inverse relationship between the two datasets. Key features, such as the refrigerator reaching 100% and the steady decline in housework hours, are well-supported with specific data points from the charts. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more explicit; for example, you could explicitly contrast the rapid rise of the refrigerator with the more gradual growth of the washing machine to provide a more analytical perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Whilst' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. However, the transition 'Whilst, time spent in housework followed a downward trend' is slightly awkward due to the comma placement and the use of 'whilst' as a conjunction here. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the information is presented in a coherent manner throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'declined steadily', 'rose sharply', and 'varied'. The terminology related to the task is accurate. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'household equipment' (which is slightly imprecise for appliances) and 'none' (which is better expressed as 'zero' or 'no households'). While the vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would help elevate the lexical range to a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'families who owned domestic appliances increased' (it is the percentage of households, not the families themselves, that increased) and '10hours' (missing a space). Additionally, the sentence 'the refrigerator was owned by none in 1920 but it increased dramatically' is slightly imprecise. Despite these minor issues, the control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
