Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two line graphs illustrates the changes in houshold ownership of three ectectrical appliances and the average amount of time spent on housework per week in one country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, ownership of all three appliances increased considerably, with refrigerators and vacuum cleaners eventaully becoming almost universal. In contrast, the amount of time spent on housework declined dramatically throughout the peroid.

In 1920, washing machines were owned by 40% of households, compared with only 30% for vacuum cleaners and almost none for refrigerators. By 1960, ownership had risen to around 70% for both washing machines and vacuum cleaners, while refrigerators reached 90%.refrigerator ownership then increased to 100% by 2000. Washing Machine ownership fluctuated slightly, falling from 70% in 1960 to about 65% in 1980, before recovering to 75% in 2019.

Meanwhile, weekly housework fell from 50 HOURS IN 1920 TO approximately 35 hours in 1940 and 20 hours in 1960. It then declined gradually, reaching about 15 hours in 1980 and 2000, before falling to just 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main trends for both the appliance ownership and the housework time. The overview clearly highlights the inverse relationship between the two datasets. You have selected key data points to support your descriptions, such as the 1960 figures and the final 2019 statistics. The comparison between the categories is well-integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed accurately; for instance, the graph shows refrigerator ownership starting at 0% in 1920, which you correctly noted, but ensure all labels and trends are consistently precise throughout the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the appliance trends to the housework time. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'before recovering to' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. The flow is natural, and the information is easy to follow. To improve, you could vary the cohesive devices slightly more to avoid repetitive structures, but the current level of cohesion is already quite strong and clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'becoming almost universal', 'declined dramatically', and 'fluctuated slightly' are well-chosen and appropriate for an academic report. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'houshold', 'ectectrical', 'eventaully', and 'peroid', which slightly detract from the overall quality. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest band. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling slips will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. You demonstrate good control over tense usage, particularly when describing historical trends. There are some minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the inconsistent capitalization in '50 HOURS IN 1920 TO' and the missing space after the period in '90%.refrigerator'. Additionally, the subject-verb agreement in the first sentence ('graphs illustrates') is incorrect. Despite these slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free and the meaning is always clear. Improving attention to detail regarding capitalization and subject-verb agreement will strengthen your grammatical accuracy.
