Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE LINE CHART COMPARES THE PROPORTION OF OWNERSHIP OF ELECRTICAL GADJETS LIKE WASHING MACHINES, REFRIGERATOR AND VACUUM CLEANER IN A NATION BETWEEN YEAR 1920 TO 2019.OVERALL, UPSERGE CAN BE NOTICED IN SALES OF REFRIGERATORS AS WELL AS OF VACUUM CLEANER. IT IS EVIDENT THAT SALES OF WASHING MACHINES SHOWS SOME FLUCTUATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CENTURY.

IN THE 1920, THERE WAS NOT A SINGLE HOUSEHOLD OWNING A REFRIGERATOR BUT AFTER 20 YEARS IT INCREASED DRASTICALLY TO A HALF OF PROPORTION AND SALES KEPT INCREASING. HOWEVER, BY THE END OF 2019 IT PEAKED UPTO 100%. ABOUT 30% HOUSEHOLD OWNED VACUUM CLEANERS IN EARLY 1920. FURTHERMORE, IT SHOWED A CONSTANT UPWARD TREND TILL 1980. BY THE YEAR 2000 IT SHOWED SAME OWNERSHIPS AS OF REFRIGERATOR.

OWNERSHIP RATES OF WASHING MACHINES SHOWED A FLUCTUATIONAL TREND THROUGHOUT THE CENTURY. INITIALLY, 40% OF HOUSEHOLD AQUIRE WASHING MACHINES. HOWEVER, IT SHOWED A INCREASING TREND TILL 1960. IN THE YEAR 1980, IT DROPPED AND THEN UPSERGED IN 2000 AND LASTLY IT CONCLUDED WITH THE LOWEST OWNERSHIP THAN OF TWO OTHER APPLIANCES.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three appliances and provides a clear overview of the trends. However, there are inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the text states that the refrigerator ownership reached 100% by 2019, whereas the chart shows it peaking earlier and remaining stable. Additionally, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing, as it claims it concluded with the lowest ownership, which is not clearly supported by the visual data provided. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the figures prevents a higher score. The response would benefit from more careful observation of the specific data points on the axes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different appliances. Cohesive devices such as 'however', 'furthermore', and 'in the year 1980' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final sentence where the comparison 'lowest ownership than of two other appliances' is grammatically awkward and confusing. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the flow could be improved with more sophisticated linking phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts at topic-specific language like 'proportion', 'fluctuational trend', and 'upward trend'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'ELECRTICAL', 'GADJETS', 'UPSERGE' (used twice), and 'AQUIRE'. These errors are noticeable but do not impede general understanding. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on accurate spelling and more precise collocations, such as using 'fluctuating' instead of 'fluctuational' and 'surged' instead of 'upserged'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points but lacks the precision required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'IN THE 1920' (should be 'In the 1920s'), 'SALES OF WASHING MACHINES SHOWS' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'PEAKED UPTO' (should be 'peaked at'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the misuse of articles and verb tenses occurs frequently. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions to improve the accuracy of their writing.
