Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by identifying main trends, but it fails to include the data regarding the 'amount of time spent doing housework,' which is a key component of the prompt. By ignoring this entire data set, the response is incomplete. While the trends for the appliances are described, the lack of comparison between the two charts and the omission of the second chart significantly limit the score. The overview provided is somewhat confusing, as it incorrectly states that the refrigerator had the lowest figure in 1920 (the chart shows it at 0%, but the vacuum cleaner and washing machine were also low). The summary needs to be more accurate and comprehensive to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'In the last' is an unnatural way to introduce a paragraph, and 'Going further' is used awkwardly. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the overview where the comparison between appliances is unclear. While there is an attempt to use linking words, the flow between sentences is not always smooth, and the referencing is occasionally confusing, making the overall logical progression feel somewhat forced rather than natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'stabled till the end of era' and 'got raised to'. The phrase 'quantity of time consumed' is also slightly unnatural in this context. While the student attempts to use some descriptive verbs like 'dramatically uplifted' and 'rose drastically', the collocation is often imprecise. To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context to convey information more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include incorrect article usage ('the washing machine started with the 40 %'), subject-verb agreement errors ('the given line charts illustrates'), and tense inconsistencies. There are also punctuation and spacing errors, such as '70 % to 1960' and 'to75 %'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. More attention to basic sentence construction and proofreading for minor slips is required.
