Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key features from the charts. The comparison between appliance ownership and housework time is well-integrated. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data; for instance, the text states that washing machine ownership 'frequently fall down' after 1960, but the data shows a more complex trend, and the claim that refrigerator ownership reached 100% in 1980 is slightly imprecise based on the visual representation. Despite these minor data-reporting slips, the main trends are accurately identified and the response is well-structured.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two distinct data sets. Cohesive devices such as 'meanwhile', 'whereas', and 'in contrast' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is logical, moving from the general overview to specific details for each category. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the flow between sentences would enhance the overall readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'ownership', 'significantly', 'universally', and 'declined' used correctly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'vaccum' (vacuum), 'houseweek' (housework), and 'approxmiately' (approximately). Additionally, there are minor collocation issues, such as 'reached at 90%' (should be 'reached 90%') and 'frequently fall down' (should be 'fluctuated' or 'decreased'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'washing machine was owned' (should be 'washing machines were owned') and 'refrigerator were hardly used' (should be 'refrigerators were hardly used'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are missing spaces after commas in several places. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors indicates a need for more careful proofreading to ensure grammatical accuracy.
