Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. You successfully selected key features, such as the saturation of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners and the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on housework. However, the analysis could be improved by making more explicit comparisons between the two charts. For instance, you could have noted that the period of most rapid growth in appliance ownership (1920–1960) corresponds directly with the sharpest decline in housework hours. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated to highlight the overall relationship between the data sets.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific data sets. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To commence with', 'Similarly', and 'Turning to', which help guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical issues, such as the lack of capitalization at the start of sentences (e.g., 'overall', 'the average'). Additionally, some transitions feel slightly formulaic. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent punctuation would help the text flow more naturally and elevate the score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trend', 'remained relatively stable', and 'declined gradually'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'most flagship product', which is not a standard collocation in this context. You also rely on some repetitive phrasing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'plateaued', 'fluctuated', or 'a significant surge'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the refrigerator', 'the washing machine') and subject-verb agreement ('charts illustrates', 'housework per week decline'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters at the start of sentences and some awkward phrasing (e.g., 'reached at 70'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
