Student answer (Band 6.5)

the given first line graph compares the percentage of households owning three electrical appliances between 1920 and 2019, while the second illustrates the number of hours spent on house work per week during the same period.

overall, ownership of washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners rose dramatically over the 100 years, reaching almost 100% by 2019. in contrast, the amount of time spent on house work fell sharply over the same period, suggesting a link between increased appliance use and reduced domestic labor.

regarding appliance ownership, washing machines started as the most common in 1920 at 40%, but were overtaken by refrigerator and vacuum cleaners by 1960. refrigerator ownership saw the steepest growth, from almost 0% to 100% in 1980. and remained at that level. vacuum cleaners also increased substantially from 30% to 100% by 2000. washing machines grew more slowly reaching 75% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and successfully identified the main features, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. The data is accurately reported, and comparisons are made between the three appliances and the time spent on housework. The information is well-selected, and the key trends are highlighted appropriately. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific years mentioned in the graph, as some descriptions of the trends could be slightly more precise regarding the exact timing of the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the appliance data, and the housework data. Cohesive devices such as 'overall', 'in contrast', 'regarding', and 'in terms of' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the paragraphing and flow could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases between sentences to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is generally clear, and the structure supports the overall argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Phrases like 'rose dramatically', 'fell sharply', and 'steepest growth' demonstrate a good command of descriptive language. There is an attempt to use less common items, and the terminology related to the task is appropriate. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it lacks the sophisticated, natural control required for the highest bands. Some minor improvements in collocation and variety would enhance the quality of the writing further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate and communication is never impeded, there are some persistent issues with punctuation and capitalization, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters. Additionally, some sentences could benefit from more varied complex structures to demonstrate greater flexibility. The majority of the sentences are error-free, but the lack of consistent attention to formal writing conventions (like capitalization) prevents a higher score in this category.
