Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, including the trends for appliances and the decline in housework hours. However, the overview is weak; it focuses on specific data points rather than identifying the overall trends. The analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing figures rather than making meaningful comparisons between the categories. While all parts of the task are addressed, the lack of a clear, synthesized summary of the trends prevents a higher score. The data reporting is generally accurate, but the lack of analytical depth limits the development of the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and a lack of varied cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, such as the start of the second paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical rather than flexible. While the overall arrangement is coherent enough to follow, the lack of sophisticated linking words makes the flow feel disjointed. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved to better group related information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'lowest percentage is obtain by' instead of 'obtained by' and 'illustrate decline pattern' instead of 'show a declining pattern'. The student relies on basic verbs like 'increase', 'rise', and 'jump' repeatedly. To reach a higher band, the student needs to use more precise academic vocabulary and improve their control over word forms and collocations to ensure the language is more natural and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('the given graph demonstrate'), incorrect verb tenses ('it increase', 'it rise'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper capitalization or spacing. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting and demonstrate a lack of control over basic grammatical rules. More attention to proofreading and sentence construction is necessary to improve accuracy.
