cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two graphs demonstrate the alteration of the ownership of power-generating home appliances and the average time spent behind households working over the time span of 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it is evident that the proportion of households using refrigerators experienced a dramatic increase over the years. The other two electric goods show an upward trend. In contrast, the total number of hours for household chores depicts a significant downward trend.

Among the electric goods, the refrigerator was at its lowest point in 1920 and increased substantially until it peaked at 100% in the year of 1980. The vacuum cleaner represents the same trend as the refrigerator, in the year 1920, roughly 30% of households used this machine and it rose significantly to reach exactly 100% in 2000. Additionally, for the last two decades, the proportion of households with refrigerators and vacuum cleaners remained stable. Compared to the other two appliances, the use of washing machines was lower, with some fluctuations in recent decades; it rose by less than three-quarters.

The total number of hours spent behind households working was highest in 1920, at 50 hours and then began to decline until 1960 at 30 hours; from then on it mostly remained constant between 20 to 10 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all three appliances and the housework hours, making relevant comparisons. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state the washing machine 'rose by less than three-quarters', which is vague and does not accurately reflect the data points provided in the chart. Additionally, your description of the housework hours as '10 to 20 hours' is slightly imprecise compared to the visual data. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited with greater precision and that comparisons are more analytical rather than just listing figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Additionally', and 'Compared to' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally smooth, moving from the appliances to the housework hours. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of data. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is more varied, as some of the sentence structures feel slightly repetitive in their approach to reporting data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dramatic increase', 'upward trend', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices. For example, 'power-generating home appliances' is not the most natural way to describe household electrical goods, and 'time spent behind households working' is an unnatural phrasing. Improving your precision with topic-specific vocabulary will help you achieve a higher score. You have a sufficient range to convey meaning clearly, but the lack of more sophisticated, precise terminology limits the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the year of 1980' (should be 'the year 1980') and 'time spent behind households working' (which is grammatically awkward). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. Your control over punctuation is generally good, and the majority of your sentences are error-free, which supports a solid band 6.5 or 7.0 level.
