Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the percentage of house households with different variety of electrical appliances from 1920 to 2019. The chart below shows number of hours of household doing housework per week.

Overall, it is clear that percentage of households with different eletrical appliances rocketed dramatically over the period. Likewise, number of hours households doing housework plummet significatly through out the years.

Regarding the percentage of households with different electric appliance, refrigerator figures surged sharply from 0% in 1920 to 90% in 1960, surpassing both washing machine and vacuum cleaner and peaked to 100% in 1980. Vacuum cleaner also experienced significant growth, from 50% in 1940 to 90% in 1980 and eventually maxed out to 100% in 2000 which is the same number as refrigerator. By comparison, washing machine figures increased from 40% in 1920 to 70% in 1960. The percentage remained relatively stable over the years and raise slightly to rougly 75% in 2019.

Looking at the number of hours of households doing housework per week, it it evident that the number dropped progressively over the period, from 50 hours per week to 20 hours per week and continue to declined to approximately 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends in both charts. You successfully highlighted the inverse relationship between the rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the report could be improved by including more comparative data. For instance, when discussing the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner, you could have explicitly contrasted their growth rates or specific timeframes more effectively. The overview is clear, but ensure that all data points mentioned are accurate according to the charts provided. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt requirements adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two distinct datasets. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use some cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'By comparison', and 'Looking at'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'the chart below' is unnecessary as the chart is provided above). To reach a higher band, try to integrate sentences more fluidly and ensure that the link between the two datasets is more explicitly stated in the overview.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'rocketed', 'plummet', 'surged', and 'progressively' to describe trends. There are some spelling errors, such as 'eletrical' and 'significatly', and minor word choice issues like 'different variety of' (which is redundant). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling will help improve your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' percentage, 'the' number), subject-verb agreement issues ('raise slightly' instead of 'rose slightly'), and tense inconsistencies ('continue to declined' instead of 'continued to decline'). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the information. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses when describing historical data and ensure consistent use of articles.
