Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a general overview and identifies key trends for the appliances and housework hours. However, the analysis is inconsistent. While it correctly identifies the rise in appliance ownership, the description of the washing machine trend is inaccurate, as it claims it 'decreased' when the data shows a fluctuation. Furthermore, the overview is slightly confusing, as it mentions 'electricity uses' rather than 'housework hours'. To improve, ensure that data points are reported accurately and that the overview clearly distinguishes between the two distinct charts provided. The summary of the main features is present, but the lack of precision in reporting the data points limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'On another chart' or 'Than started decreased'. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas within sentences. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas feels disjointed at times. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking phrases (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'meanwhile') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, logical flow that connects back to the main topic.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'upgraded respectively' and 'dramatical changes'. The student relies on basic phrasing like 'massive increase' and 'huge popularity'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and the presence of spelling errors (e.g., 't0', 'tp', 'Vaccum') indicate a restricted range. To improve, the student should learn more precise collocations for describing trends, such as 'a steady climb', 'a significant decline', or 'fluctuated', and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but these are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('those who uses', 'people were spend'), missing articles, and awkward sentence construction ('It has a massive increase from 1920 tp 1980'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences or missing spaces after periods. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of the writing.
