cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two bar charts illustrate the proportion of electrical appliances ownership and the time devoted to housework in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the percentage of households using electrical appliances dramatically upsurged while hours spent on housework weekly declined considerably over the period.

Households with refrigerator ownership started at lowest in 1920 and climbed to 90% in 1960, reached 100% by 1980 and then levelled off. Vaccum cleaner followed the similar trend, started at 30% ownership rosed to 100% in 2000 and remained stable throughout. However, the ratio of washing machine possession varied across the entire period. It was initially at 40% in 1920, increased noticeably by decreased to 63% in 1980 and again maintained its prior tendency till end.

As the ownership of household appliances escalated, the number of hours spent on housework reduced. In 1920, 50% of time was devoted for housework per week which sharply dropped to 10% by 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends in appliance ownership and housework time. You successfully highlight the inverse relationship between the two datasets. However, the description of the washing machine data is confusing; you mention it 'increased noticeably by decreased to 63%', which is grammatically and logically unclear. Additionally, the final sentence regarding the 50% to 10% drop in housework time is a good summary, but the data interpretation could be more precise by referencing the specific timeframes (1920 and 2019) more clearly throughout the body paragraphs. Overall, the main features are reported, but the clarity of data presentation needs improvement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Overall' to signal shifts in the narrative. However, the flow within the third paragraph is hampered by awkward phrasing, such as 'maintained its prior tendency till end', which makes the progression of ideas feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the appliance data and the housework data could be smoother to better emphasize the comparison requested in the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'devoted', 'escalated', and 'levelled off'. There are some instances of awkward word choice or incorrect collocations, such as 'dramatically upsurged' (upsurged is rarely used with 'dramatically') and 'prior tendency'. The phrase 'Vaccum cleaner' contains a spelling error. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Improving your control over collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'started at lowest' should be 'started at the lowest level', and 'rosed to' is an incorrect verb form (should be 'rose'). The sentence 'increased noticeably by decreased to 63%' is grammatically incoherent. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of these grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
