Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graphs illustrate the availability of electrical appliances available in households and a relative amount of time taken to do the housework, providing the data between [redacted phone].

Overall, the owner ships of electrical appliances in households increased overtime with a proportional decrease in the time required to do the house chores.

A generalized increasing trend is observed towards the ownership of the appliances. In 1920 refrigerators were not available in any homes whereas, vacuums were present in only 30% of the homes. Both showed a steep rise towards the 100% availability by 1980 and 2000 respectively. Washing machines demonstrated a steady rise from the 40% ownership in 1920 to a 75% in 2019. A small dip was also observed between [redacted phone] from 70% ownership to a drop of 60%.

The number of hours taken by households per week to do house chores demonstrated a steep decline from 50 hours to merely 20 hours between [redacted phone], when the majority of houses were buying electronic appliances. From 1960 onwards, time taken remained almost steady showing a decline of only 10 hours over the course of next 60 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. You successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the two datasets. The overview is clear and highlights the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on chores. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned a dip in washing machine ownership between 1960-1980, but the graph shows a steady increase or plateau rather than a significant drop. Precision in data reporting is essential for Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on distinct aspects of the data. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 1920', and 'From 1960 onwards' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the two body paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, ensure that the connection between the rise in appliances and the decrease in housework time is explicitly linked using more sophisticated cohesive devices rather than just presenting them as separate observations.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'availability', 'proportional decrease', and 'steep decline'. There are some minor errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'owner ships' (should be 'ownership') and 'house chores' (usually 'household chores'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations related to data trends would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the grammar is generally accurate. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'availability of electrical appliances available' (redundant) and 'a 75% in 2019' (should be '75% in 2019'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there is an unnecessary comma in 'refrigerators were not available in any homes whereas, vacuums were present'. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring greater precision in article usage would help improve this score.
