The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graphs illustrate changes in the ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent on housework per week in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, ownership of all three appliances increased considerably, while the amount of time spent on housework declined significantly. Refrigerators became the most widely owned appliance, reaching 100% ownership, whereas vacuum cleaners were owned by approximately 75% of households in 2019.
In 1920, washing machines and vacuum cleaners were owned by around 40% and 30% of households respectively, while refrigerators were not owned by any households. Refrigerator ownership then rose rapidly, reaching 100% by 1980 and remaining at this level thereafter. Washing-machine ownership also increased overall, despite some fluctuations, and reached 100% in 2019. Similarly, the proportion of households with vacuum cleaners increased, although it fluctuated throughout the period.
Meanwhile, the average time spent on housework fell steadily from 50 hours per week in 1920 to just 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends—the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time—and supported this with specific data points from the charts. The selection of information is logical, covering the start and end points as well as key developments like the rapid rise of refrigerator ownership. The comparison between the three appliances and the housework trend is well-integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, ensure the distinction between the 1920 starting points and the 2019 end points is consistently highlighted to show the full extent of the changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general appliance trends to the specific housework data. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'meanwhile', 'similarly', and 'although' are used accurately to link sentences and clauses. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. The flow is natural, and the reader can easily follow the comparison between the different categories of appliances and the time spent on housework throughout the century.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Phrases like 'increased considerably', 'declined significantly', and 'fluctuated throughout the period' demonstrate a good command of descriptive language suitable for a Task 1 report. The vocabulary is precise and used in the correct context. While the range is adequate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increased' and 'decreased' could elevate the response further. There are no spelling or word-choice errors, and the terminology related to the graph is handled with confidence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while the amount of time...', 'although it fluctuated...') and passive voice constructions ('were owned by...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with no noticeable errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. The sentences are well-constructed and error-free, which demonstrates a high level of control. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with even more varied sentence beginnings or more complex participial phrases to further demonstrate grammatical flexibility.
